This year, I’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving as an Expat. Being an expat can bring unique challenges during the holidays, especially when you’re far from family or navigating a different culture. But Thanksgiving is a beautiful opportunity to connect with new friends, embrace local traditions, and celebrate in ways that make you feel at home anywhere. I took the liberty to share some ideas for indulging in your day of gratitude, while honoring your tradition, in the case that you yourself are an Expat or considering being one real soon.
- Host a Multicultural Potluck of Gratitude
Invite friends from various cultural backgrounds and ask them to bring a dish that represents something they’re grateful for from their home country. Share stories about the significance of each dish—it’s a delicious way to bond and learn about each other’s roots.
- Send a Gratitude Postcard
Take time to write postcards or letters to loved ones back home, sharing what you appreciate about them and updating them on your expat adventures. This simple act of connection can be deeply meaningful for both you and the recipient.
- Virtual Thanksgiving Party
Gather your friends or family online for a virtual celebration. Share gratitude, play interactive games like trivia or charades, and even host a “show and tell” where everyone shares something they’re thankful for in their current location.
- Explore Local Traditions of Gratitude
Research how your host country expresses gratitude or celebrates harvest-like holidays. Try participating in these local customs or adapting them into your Thanksgiving celebration. For instance, you might visit a market to source fresh, local ingredients or attend a cultural event that fosters connection.
- Create a ‘Thankfulness Photo Journal’
Take photos of places, people, and experiences in your host country that fill you with gratitude. Share these pictures in a photo album or on social media with captions about why each moment is meaningful. It’s a great way to appreciate your expat journey and connect with friends online.
- Celebrate with Fellow Expats
Reach out to expat communities in your area to find or organize a Thanksgiving gathering. Sharing the holiday with others who understand the experience of being away from home can create lasting friendships and cherished memories.
- Gratitude Across Time Zones
If you can’t be with loved ones, coordinate a gratitude call across time zones. Set aside time to express thanks for each other and share updates about what you’re grateful for this year. Even a quick call can bridge the distance.
- Take a Gratitude Day Trip
Use Thanksgiving as an opportunity to explore your host country. Take a day trip to a beautiful or historic location and reflect on the unique opportunities your expat life has brought you.
No matter where you are in the world, gratitude knows no borders. These ideas help create a sense of belonging and highlight the joys of your expat journey, making Thanksgiving truly unforgettable.
Are there unique Thanksgiving traditions you’ve started as an expat? To share your ideas with me and readers, leave a reply. I’d love to hear them!
