Fears and Phobias can develop as a result of a traumatic event experienced in your past. They may even be learned from a parent or other people who’ve influenced your life. Sometimes the reason for a fear or phobia is unknown, it just happens, and is in correlation to specific stimuli.

Fears and phobias set off a natural stress response, beginning from the amygdala (a little almond shaped mass in each hemisphere of the brain). A stimulus triggers the amygdala to fire off the process that we know as “Flight, Fight or Freeze”. When the emotions around a trigger are notably intense, we strive to avoid the stimuli and this becomes a natural phobic response. You may see a spider, shriek, freeze, find your heart pounds away or note that sweat beads begin to drip down your face….and ultimately come to avoid spiders!

The best thing about phobias is that when we are able make accommodations to avoid them, we can eliminate the feelings brought about and spurred on by the stress response. However, avoiding fears and phobias can dramatically limit our life experiences. Some phobias can cause a person to isolate themselves from others as they begin to require hard and fast rules that may be too complex for others to tolerate. Social Isolation can lead to anxiety and depression.

Fortunately, hypnosis is a great tool to employ in helping someone to release any fears and phobias. Hypnosis can be rather quick, safe and effective at providing life-long relief. Hypnotic methods can work to release a fear or phobia while simultaneously rewiring the brain and swapping out the unwanted response pattern for a more desirable one.

While there are many unique and unheard of phobias out there, the most common phobias are reported as:

  • Aerophobia – fear of flying
  • Mysophobia – fear of germs
  • Claustrophobia – fear of small spaces
  • Astraphobia – fear of thunder and lightning (common with children)
  • Cynophobia – fear of dogs
  • Agoraphobia – fear of public or crowded spaces
  • Acrophobia – fear of heights
  • Ophidiophobia – fear of snakes
  • Arachnophobia – fear of spiders
